The Feast of San Gennaro, Sept. 12-22 in Little Itlay

The annual Feast of San Gennaro is back!  Starting Sept. 12 and running through Sept. 22, it’s eleven days of fun, celebration, and food, food, food on Mulberry Street between Houston and Canal in Little Italy.

At the turn of the 20th century, when Italian immigrants settled on the Lower East Side, each region settled on a different street. The Neapolitans claimed Mulberry. In 1926 they decided to have a one day block party for their patron saint and the protector of Naples, San Gennaro.  From there it’s grown to the festive street fair we enjoy today, 97 years later.

When we were kids on Long Island, we’d come into “the city” with our families and gorge on sausage and pepper heroes, arancini, and zeppole. Happy memories, and pretty much what we’re planning to do one night next week.
