Can I Recycle a Pizza Box?

You know that feeling of standing in front of your building's recycling bins, baffled about what goes where?  We figured if we had questions you did too, so we did some research:

  • Pizza and bakery boxes.  Yes, if they're just greasy.  Caked on food?  It goes in the trash.

  • Milk and beverage cartons.  Yes, but they're not paper.  Their coatings mean they should go in the other bin.

  • Dirty aluminum cans.  Yes.  Rinse them out first.  They don't have to be pristine.

  • Plastic bags.  No.  They can tangle and jam the recycling machinery.

  • Bottle caps. Yes, if they're screwed onto an empty bottle.  Otherwise, no.  On their own they are too tiny and can also gum up the machinery.

  • Cardboard coffee cups. Yes, but the plastic lid goes in the other bin.

  • Wire hangers. "No wire hangers, ever?"  Wrong.  Wire hangers are a yes.

  • Mixed paper: Yes.  Staples and plastic windows (like on envelopes) are fine.

  • Bubble wrap, chip bags, dirty diapers.  Well-intentioned people sometimes do try and recycle the latter (ugh).  All no.

The milk carton one surprised us the most.  Which one surprised you?  We'd love to know.
